Scheyett’s honors include the National Alliance on Mental Illness and Eli Lilly Foundation’s “Heroes in the Fight” award, which recognizes contributions to mental health care the Social Worker of the Year Award from the North Carolina Chapter of the National Association of Social Workers the President’s Award from the South Carolina Action Council for Cross-Cultural Mental Health and Human Services, Inc. Louis Group for Social Work research, and is currently a member of the Board of the National Association of Deans and Directors of Schools of Social Work. Scheyett has served in numerous leadership roles, including serving as a member of the North Carolina and national boards of NASW, as a member of the board of the St. She is a consulting editor for Social Work Research and the Journal of Social Work Education, and contributes as an ad hoc reviewer for numerous journals. She edited the book “Making the transition to managed behavioral health care: A guide for practitioners and agencies” and has published more than 60 peer-reviewed research articles and book chapters. She has researched the subject for more than 25 years, with a particular focus on the intersection of mental illness and the legal system. Her background in both the natural and social sciences supports her longstanding interest in improving services and promoting recovery for those with severe mental illnesses. In addition to a master’s and doctoral degree in social work, Scheyett holds degrees in biology and human genetics. Her work experiences also include clinical and administrative positions in community mental health services. Prior to her tenure at USC, Scheyett served as associate dean for academic affairs at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Social Work. In addition, the college broadened its interdisciplinary activities and created new partnerships with communities and public and private agencies. Licensure pass rates for the college rose by nearly 40 percent, research expenditures and peer-reviewed publications increased dramatically, and the college exceeded a $4 million fundraising goal and established seven endowed scholarships. During her five years there, she established an impressive record of stimulating academic achievement while building financial support for the college. Her priorities include strengthening the school’s programs to better meet the challenges of the 21st century, expanding interdisciplinary opportunities, increasing research activity, promoting diversity and a focus on social and economic justice, and fostering meaningful community collaborations.īefore joining UGA, Scheyett served as dean of the College of Social Work at the University of South Carolina. As dean, her goals are grounded in the principles of excellence and impact, ensuring that graduates have the best possible education and that faculty engage in research and service that has a significant outcome for the local, national, and international communities. She is the fourth dean of the school since it was founded in 1964.
